Artist's Comments

Inspired by the famous Shepard Fairey (Obey Giant).
I wanted to try and recreate a simular effect like his latest Obama posters :)

Special thanks to Jason Means for the reference photo!

Edit: You can download the working illustrator file including the source file here!

Oh and by the way, there happens to be a tutorial on Vectortuts to achieve this same effect, go check it out!

imo, your version's cleaner than the psdtut's, i'd like to know how you executed this one

I did worked a bit differently then the tutorial on PSDtuts. There are lots of steps in that tutorial that are pretty unefficient. Anyway, here's how I worked...

Instead of applying and repeating the Image Adjustment Threshold in Photoshop, I only used 2 filters to make different versions; Poster Edges and Cutout.

Then I imported the psd file with it's 3 layers (the original image, the Poster Edges version and the Cutout) in Illustrator.

The Cutout filter gave me different colorshades making it easy for me to outline the shapes. I used the Poster Edges filter to draw the details on the face.

If the cutout filter didn't worked so well I swapped between the 3 layers. The only thing I needed to do is turning the visibility off in Photoshop :)

Then I basically worked my way up, starting from dark blue to red, then light blue... and so on. Saving every color to it's own layer.

Hope that was a bit helpfull. You should have a look at my Illustrator file, then you can see the workflow for yourself! ;)

Excellent tutorial. I enjoyed the one on VectorTuts as well, but your mods for making it easier were right on! Thanks so much!
